My Writing Journey to Finish the Book

My writing journey to finish my book.

I’ve been writing stories for years, but Signals in the Lemon Grove became something different. From the moment I started it in August 2025, I knew I’d found a story worth telling.

By December, after writing more than thirty chapters, I finished the first draft. I then worked with an editor, who guided the manuscript through a professional assessment, completed in early March 2026.

Since then, I’ve been revising the novel while balancing a full-time job. It’s been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey, and I’m now approaching the end of the first major revision. Every pass brings the story one step closer to the book I imagined from the very beginning.

7/18/26

Today I completed the revision of Chapter 30 of Signals in the Lemon Grove. With a total of 35 chapters, the finish line is finally coming into view. Revising each chapter has been just as rewarding as writing the first draft, giving me the opportunity to strengthen the story, deepen the characters, and refine the emotional journey. It's exciting to see the novel taking its final shape, one chapter at a time.

Chapter 31 revision has been completed as of 8:24 pm, 7/27/26.

Chapter 32 revision has been completed as of 5:45 am, 7/31/26.

Chapter 33 revision has been completed as of 9:00 am, 8/1/26.

Chapter 34 revision has been completed as of 5:00 am, 8/3/26.

Chapter 35 revision has been completed as of 5:00 am, 8/6/26.

Now that all the chapters have been revised by incorporating the recommendations from the assessment letter, the manuscript is complete.

My next step is to read through the entire novel from beginning to end. During the final pass, I'll make a few additional changes: adding some details, removing others, and ensuring everything flows smoothly.

Once I'm satisfied with the manuscript. I will then decide whether to send it to a proofreader or something of that sort, I hear that would be a good investment. It's exciting to be this close to the finish line, and I can't wait to share more as the journey continues.

For the past year, chapter one with the line. “The Ferris wheel dwarfed the festival grounds like a transformer waking from a century-long nap.”

I liked it at first, It felt big and playful, and for a while it matched where I was as a beginning writer. But as I kept learning and practicing, the line stopped feeling right. It drew too much attention to itself and didn’t really fit the mood I wanted for Summerfest.

So I changed it to:

“The Ferris wheel towered over the festival grounds, rising above the stages, venders, and crowds below. Its bright lights were visible nearly anywhere at Summerfest.”

This version still shows how huge and important the Ferris wheel is, but it stays grounded in the scene instead of pulling you out of it. It reflects how my writing has grown, from trying to be clever to focusing more clarify, mood, and the reader’s experience.

Little changes like this are part of how I’ve gone from beginner to a writer who’s always working to sharpen her skills. Thanks for following as the story (and I) keep evolving.
